As marketers you are well versed in copy writing, skilled at storytelling and have excellent attention to detail; so you think that creating your own marketing CV should be a breeze.
However, we trip over the same mistakes again and again, some of which will actually lose candidates the opportunity of an interview. So, we thought we’d compile the most common mistakes to help you avoid them.
- What was that company…? Don’t assume that everyone knows who your previous employers are and what they do. If an employer can’t see your background at a glance they are unlikely to dig deeper. Add in a short sentence to set your experience in context. What industry they are in, size, turnover, product etc.
- Sorry what was it you do again…? Many of us are guilty of over indulging in corporate marketing jargon but try not to litter your CV with it. Ensure your responsibilities are clearly stated in bullet points to avoid misunderstanding
- Your masterpiece: We’re marketers; the temptation to get creative in presenting our own brand is strong. Allow your personality to shine through, but keep the format simple. Over complicated layouts that don’t scan well will make you stand out from the crowd, for all the wrong reasons.
- One size does not fit all: It is one of the most common complaints from candidates – lots of effort go in to tailoring your CV, but what works for one company will not work for another. The effort is worth making to maximise your chances of success.
- Spelling mistakes: This is so obvious it feels silly having to include it. However, we get far too many CV’s that haven’t been thoroughly proofed and include spelling or grammatical mistakes. If you’ve applied for a role that includes copy writing and content management with a CV full of mistakes, would you consider the candidate? It’s easy to do, so get someone else to check it through before you submit.
